Monks are warriors food so physical is the first choice to survive a bit longer.
Spirits easily convert damage into elemental damage so thats no argument.
simply:
- If you are more on divine favour OR protection and in the background, use elemental armor (because warriors never reach you, but spells do)
- If you are more on Smithing OR Healing in the foreground, use physical armor.
No monk should fear rangers (or mesmers), they just heal whatever they do.

Mesmers are the thing monks are most afraid of.. they can do some serious damage and keep a monk from casting.
But anyways, I would have to say get the physical -- it has a larger bonus, and warriors love to jump on us. The bonus can be especially helpful with all those bloody crippling attacks warriors use.

Necromancers also have some nasty anti monk spells, hexes than 1/2 healing power. hexes that prevent you casting on allies and heal necromancers in stead, strip enchantments.

If you want to use Judges, get chest and legs only - the hands and feet are pretty much trash from the -energy, the added protection is pretty insignificant.
Wanderers is nice with all the elementalist spike running around in PvP.
Tattoos are always solid, and you get non-bugged leggings in PvE.
Eh, just don't use Judge's hands and feet and you're fine. I like the rest. Tattoos are probably the best bet for general usage all things considered.
Peace,
-CxE

I don't know why anyone hasn't said this yet, but elemental damage does not ignore armor.

no you are correct it does not "ignore" armor. it has some armor penetrations spells but really the only spells that ignore armor are necromancer spells..
as far as a monk being "warrior food" that is laughable. no self respecting monk should be afraid of a warrior, mesmers are much more dangerous than a warrior for monks or any caster really.

I think his talking about the earth ignore armour damage spells.
Also give some credit to rangers, they can be quite deadly to monks, if the ranger can land a concussion shot then he can't do much about without the help of another allie to take the effect off. As long as dazed stays, the monk is pretty much shutdown and much easier to land distracting shots on orison.

i agree rangers are very underapprecaited in this game a good ranger is an excellent addition to any team.
as long as they know what they are doing that is. as the game gets a bit older and more experienced rangers progress through the game you will see a different attitude towards them

It's worth knowing how armour works whilst making this decision. Hit location is decided randomly, with chest then legs being the most likely hit locations. Certain aspects can make certain locations more or less likely, f.ex, a ranger shooting from elevated ground may be more likely to hit the head.
One factor that is very interesting, is that a lot of direct damage spells automatically target the chest in terms of calculating damage. For this reason, +el armour on the chest can be more important than it would otherwise seem.
Currently, my monk uses Sacred chest, rest tats.
